Following my recent string of goth events I attended the first day of the special Artism Festa Summer 2010 happening at Live Inn Rosa in Ikebukuro. As many Artism events it went from the afternoon to the evening, which means I didn’t have to worry about missing my last train. I was especially looking forward to the performance by the Japanese theater group 虚飾集団廻天百眼 (Kyoshoku Shūdan Kaiten Hyaku-me). Other performers were Mu☆Mu, Caramelman, 装置メガネ (Sōchi Megane), マイナス人生オーケストラ (Mainus Jinsei Ōkesutora), Zwecklos, Rose Noire and a second show group called MONT★SUCHT.

When I arrived I only saw the second part of Mu☆Mu’s gig. Fortunately, I had seen him before, so I didn’t have to shoot so many pictures. Anyway, he was a fun performer this time, too.

The second performance of the day was by another solo project called きゃらめるまん (Kyarameruman). Tetsuya Shimomura is the Caramelman, who delivers a fun mixture of electronic sounds, samples and techno music while singing or playing guitar.

After these two solo artists came the first band of the evening. The were called 装置メガネ (Sōchi Megane) which translates to “pair of glasses apparatus”. Obviously this is because all three members of the band wear glasses. Their music was electronic pop reminiscent of the 1980s.

After that came the Japanese punk band マイナス人生オーケストラ (Mainus Jinsei Ōkesutora). They played a loud and energic blend of New Wave punk and disco-cyber industrial. The band members were constantly jumping around, which made it not exactly easy to get good pictures.

After these musical performances came my favorite highlight of the evening: a show of the theater company 虚飾集団廻天百眼 (Kyoshoku Shūdan Kaiten Hyaku-me). Their play 「夢の中で現実を見た?おしまいだっ!」 (“Saw the reality in a dream? That it!”) extremely well presented by the young actresses and actors.

I had seen the next band (like the previous performer) already at the Gothic Bar Heaven 26 event, so I did take only a few shots this time of the industrial band Zwecklos. As before, Takuya and Ageha’s music was very loud and very powerful.

The musical headliner of the first day of the Artism Festa Summer 2010 was Rose Noire. Consisting of the two graduates from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, they did indeed give a very impressive performance of beautiful violin music.

The final performance of this day was given by the Japanese theater company MONT★SUCHT. They presented a weird play inspired by German mysticism and surrealism in a visually very impressive show. It was great to see that Tokyo’s small goth scene supports so many very fine independent theater groups of high caliber.

Last but not least a few shots of the attendees of the Artism Festa in Ikebukuro. Yes, these are regular party-goers at a Japanese goth club! I love that they dress up like this even though this gathering was rather small.
